Broadcom Escalates AI Chip Race with Thor Ultra Launch, Challenging Nvidia’s Dominance
Broadcom Inc. has fired the latest salvo in the high-stakes battle for AI infrastructure supremacy with the launch of its Thor Ultra networking chip. The semiconductor giant's new offering enables data center operators to interconnect hundreds of thousands of processors, directly challenging Nvidia Corp.'s position in the AI hardware market.
The Thor Ultra chip represents a significant leap in scale, allowing for the development of more sophisticated AI models comparable to those powering ChatGPT. Broadcom's San Jose-based engineering team subjected the chip to rigorous testing for power efficiency, thermal performance, and data throughput before release. "Network plays an extremely important role in building these large clusters," said Ram Velaga, Broadcom's Senior Vice President.
